Boxing is an exhilarating sport, whether it is a bout between two lightweight boxers bouncing endlessly around the ring or two heavyweights trading huge blows It will have you gripped from start to finish.  Betting on boxing can be as entertaining as the fight itself and we have you covered by providing you with all of the information needed for online boxing betting.

Boxing Competitions

There are four major belts that all boxers aim to win in their careers, because they all want to be known as a world champion. The four world title belts are handed out by the following organisations:

  • World Boxing Association (WBA)
  • World Boxing Council (WBC)
  • International Boxing Federation (IBF)
  • World Boxing Organisation (WBO)

If a boxer holds all four of these belts at one time, then they are the undisputed world champion.  Each individual country has their own national boxing competitions too. This allows competitors to be in with the chance of winning a belt and provides us with even more opportunities to make money each weekend throughout the year. These bouts are used by the elite boxers as a stepping stone as they progress through their career before they have a shot at a world title.

Weight Divisions

Boxing is a year-round sport with at least one fight card happening each weekend, thanks to the large number of weight divisions. Therefore, we can take full advantage of betting on this fantastic sport 52 weeks of the year.

Below we will highlight a select number of weight divisions and the current most notable fighters in each one:

  • Heavyweight – Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder. Everyone across the globe is waiting for these two to square off against each other.
  • Light Heavyweight – Jean Pascal (a fellow Canadian!).
  • Middleweight – Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin. This is probably the most contested division in boxing.
  • Welterweight – Manny Pacquiao and Terrance Crawford.
  • Lightweight – Teofimo Lopez, he currently holds 3 of the 4 world title belts.

Boxing Betting Markets

There are a number of betting markets that we can utilise when looking into the weekends fight card. The most popular ones are highlighted below.

To Win the Fight

Who is going to come out on top in the upcoming fight? This is a very popular market with bettors, but unfortunately, sportsbooks do not always offer good odds. There is usually a heavy favourite in a match-up which means the odds for that fighter to win will be extremely low. This isn’t always the case when it comes to a world title fight, so please keep your eye out for valuable odds.

Round Betting

Round betting is usually split up into two – individual and group round betting.

Individual round betting is when you decide on an outcome in a specific round of a fight. For example, you would place a wager on Anthony Joshua to win his fight in Round 7. The probability of Joshua winning in Round 7 is quite low (due to there being 12 total rounds in boxing), however, the odds can be highly in our favour resulting in large pay-outs if you win.

To increase the probability of winning your bet, many bettors like to utilise the group round betting market. Here, you could place a bet on Canelo Alvarez to win the fight in Rounds 1-3. The odds will be lower for this market, reducing the overall pay-out for a winner.

Method of Victory

There are 8 total method of victories offered by sportsbooks. We will highlight the main 3 methods below.

  • Knockout (KO) – this involves one boxer landing the final punch and knocking out his opponent. Sportsbooks will offer a Technical Knockout (TKO) separately or alongside KO. TKO means a boxer wins the match because the referee has stopped the fight if the opponent is unable to continue fighting.
  • Decision – during a fight, there are 3 judges sat ringside grading each boxer. If the fight has lasted the full 12 rounds, then the winner will be decided by the points earned from each judge. There can be a unanimous decision where all 3 judges have awarded more points to one fighter, or a split decision, where 2 judges have awarded the fight to one boxer, and the third judge has awarded the fight to the other one.
  • Draw – a draw in boxing is very rare but it does happen. For example, the most recent draw was in the fight between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder back in December 2018.

Accumulators

There are multiple fights happening on each card. Accumulators are a great way of grouping together a number of boxers together on the card – especially if they are heavy favourites with low odds. Placing an accumulator will increase the odds and provide large pay-outs if it wins.
