There is a PGA and European Tour Event taking place at the same time across 45 weeks of the year. That’s 4 days of the week for 45 weeks where 2 events are taking place across the world, providing Canadian bettors with golfing entertainment and ample betting opportunities.

The best sportsbooks have accommodated the increasing popularity of golf betting by offering future / outright markets for each event, along with daily bets for each of the 4 rounds. We are going to highlight a number of the markets you can place bets on throughout this article. If there are golf and betting terms that are new to you, it might be worthwhile to read over our beginner's golf betting guide.

Future / Outright Betting

Future and outright betting markets involve an event happening at the end of a tournament or further into the year.

Outright Betting

Outright betting for an upcoming event comprise betting on the following:

  • Tournament Winner – who is going to record the lowest number of strokes across 4 rounds and win the tournament.
  • Top 5 / 10 / 20 – which golfer you believe will finish in the top 5 / 10 / 20. These are great markets to take advantage of, because if a particular golfer is in form and has performed well on the course in previous years, then backing them to finish in one of the above brackets can be a safer bet than backing them to win it outright.
  • Tournament Match / Group Betting – sportsbooks will group together 2, 3 or 4 golfers who are competing at the event. The bettor can then decide which golfer is going to have the best score out of the group at the end of the tournament.

Future Betting

There are fewer markets for future betting. Sportsbooks will usually offer outright markets on the upcoming Major events or specialist events, such as the Ryder Cup, that are taking place later in the year.

Daily Markets

It is not all about betting on the winner or a golfer finishing in the top 10 these days. Sportsbooks offer plenty of daily markets to keep a bettor more engaged during each day of the tournament. The daily markets on offer include:

  • Match-ups – sportsbooks group together around 30-40 competitors into a one on one match-up. It doesn’t matter whether they are teeing off in the same group. They will offer odds on which golfer will record a better score during their round. For example, Round 1 Match-up - Corey Connors (+100) v Adam Hadwin (-120). Here Adam Hadwin is considered to be the favourite in this match-up by the lower odds offered. If Hadwin goes 2 under par during his round, and Connors goes 4 under par, Connors will win.
  • Group Betting – the rules are exactly the same as with match-up betting, but this market will include a group of 3 / 4 golfers not 2. The odds are much more favourable for us because of the higher number of golfers involved.

Other Markets for Consideration

Another intriguing market on offer is the top nationality. Each golfer is grouped together depending on their nationality, whether they are from Canada, United States, England, etc. You have the option of choosing which golfer will have the lowest score compared to their compatriots at the end of an event. Value can be found in these markets, especially where there are fewer competitors from one nationality. The nationalities are split differently depending on whether you are betting on a PGA or European Tour event. A PGA event will group together players from America, Europe and Rest of World. The European events group players from each individual European country (Italy, Spain, England etc) and will also include America, South Africa and Rest of World.

In-play Betting

In-play betting is hugely popular in other sports, such as Basketball, Football and Ice Hockey. However, it has become a big part of online golf betting in recent years. More and more sportsbooks are starting to offer in-play markets during a golf event. These markets include:

  • Driver Distance – you are able to bet on the over / under number of yards a golfer will drive the ball off the tee for each hole. Always keep an eye out for the current weather impacting each hole, if a golfer is driving into the wind, then the ball isn’t going to go as far, and they may play it safe instead of hitting it as far as they can.
  • Birdie / Par / Bogey Recorded – you can bet on whether a golfer will record a birdie / par / bogey for each hole they play.
  • Fairway Hit – whether a golfer will land on the fairway from their drive. Again, knowing how the course is structured is paramount to being successful when betting on this market. If the fairways are wide, then a golfer is more likely to land on it.

Everyone Loves a Hole in One

Whether you are a golfer or a spectator, everyone loves to see a hole in one happen during a tournament. Sportsbooks offer a market on whether a hole in one will happen during an entire event. The odds for this happening are actually quite low, which is down to the ever changing and evolving equipment / balls being used by professional golfers.

We have highlighted a number of markets above for you to take advantage of. Please select each betting type carefully with the help of your research so that you can beat the bookie and win some money betting on golf online!
